Coober Pedy is a mix of two Aboriginal words, Kupaka and Piti. Kupaka is a Mutuntjarra word for ‘white man’ and Piti an Antakirinja word for ‘hole’. Stretching some 5,300km, it begins east of Surfer’s Paradise in Queensland and ends up north of Ceduna in the Great Australian Bite.

Living underground provided the perfect temperature all 12 months round – a snug 25 degrees, permitting them to escape the heat of the summer (averages 40 degrees) and the cool desert nights in the winter (as low as 4 degrees).
